    You have a wonderful eye for abstraction. Are you by chance a Mac user? In OS X Tiger, one of the built-in screensavers is a great bunch of photos of curled and folded paper lit from behind and from the side. So soft and pleasing. This reminded me of those.

    Based on the angle just prior to the corner, indicating a slight deformation, I would go with pointing out. If it was pointing in, that means there would have been a uniform expansion as opposed to compression, and my money says that the compression option is more likely.
